Toba Agudo Concrete Fire Bowl from Montana Fire Pits

Lava Rock and Pebble Calculator

Lava rock and pebbles are great looking filler options to help conceal your fire pit burner

Use lava rock by itself for a simple, natural look. Or pair it with lava pebbles, logs, or cannon fireballs.

There is standard “porous” lava rock, or a style known as “Rolled”, or “Tumbled” lava rock. Most commonly we refer to this style as “lava pebbles”. With lava pebbles, you get a cleaner, more refined look. Either options function well in a fire pit.

Lava rock is sold by weight, but a fire pit fills by volume, and that gap is why we built the calculator. Not every table is included with the amount of lava rock needed to fill the burn area. Our bags range from 10 to 20 lb, which adds another step to the math. How much you need comes down to the length and width of your burner pan and how deep you want the bed, with enough rock to cover the burner and settle into an even layer below the ledge. Enter your pan dimensions and depth, and the calculator turns that volume into the weight you need so you can choose the bag sizes that get you there. You end up with a full, level bed across the pan and very little left over in the garage.

Most common depth: 3″ to fully conceal a Crossfire Burner.
