Sizing a fire pit isn’t really about the pit. It’s about the space around it. Get the seating zone right and the pit’s diameter follows naturally.
The rule we use: leave 36 inches between the pit’s edge and the front of every chair. That’s enough for legs to extend without scorching, easy enough to lean in to roast a marshmallow, and far enough that nobody feels crowded. Multiply that by the seating width on each side and you have your minimum patio dimensions.
For a 4-seat configuration, a 30-36 inch round pit works in a 12-foot square patio. Six-seat layouts want a 42-48 inch pit and a 16-foot square. Anything bigger and you’re into focal-point territory — the pit anchors the whole outdoor room.
