1) What Are BTUs? (Simple Definition)
BTU is a measurement of heat output. Higher BTUs create hotter fires, taller flames, stronger radiant warmth, better wind resistance, and improved performance in cooler climates.
However, BTUs only matter if the burner design is efficient. A poorly engineered 150,000 BTU burner can feel weaker than a well‑designed 100,000 BTU burner.

Adjust upward for wind, elevation, and larger seating distances.
- Warm / Mild Climates (FL, SoCal, Carolinas): 90,000–150,000 BTU
- Cool Climates (MT, CO, UT, OR): 180,000–250,000 BTU
- Cold Climates (ID, MN, Northern MT/Canada): 250,000–400,000 BTU

5) How Seating Distance Affects BTUs
The farther you sit from the flame, the more BTUs you need. For deep seating or oversized patio furniture, increase BTUs by 25–40%.

- Flame Preference: If you love dramatic flames, plan for 180k+ BTU for 48–60″ and 250k+ for 60″+.

- Too many elbows or fittings restricting flow.
