Do you want to have a fire feature where you can easily control the flames? Key valves and flex lines are your secret weapons! These essential components give you the power to adjust the flame height and safely turn off the gas, ensuring a truly enjoyable and worry-free experience.
Why You Need a Key Valve and Flex Line
Think of the key valve as the conductor of your fire feature orchestra. It allows you to fine-tune the flame, creating the perfect setting for any occasion. The flex line, on the other hand, is the reliable stagehand, ensuring a smooth and efficient flow of gas from the key valve to the burner.
While some setups utilize gas valves or propane nozzles, a key valve/flex line combination offers unparalleled control and safety. This is especially important for larger fire features or those situated further from the gas source. Even if you have a fancy electronic ignition system, you may still want a key valve and flex line to adjust the flame.
Choosing the Right Size
Don’t get bogged down in the technicalities of sizing! When you order a burner package or a complete fire feature system from Montana Fire Pits, we take the guesswork out of the equation. We’ll provide you with the perfect key valve and flex line size to match your specific setup.
Say Goodbye to Annoying Whistles
Ever heard a fire feature that sounds like a screaming tea kettle? That’s the dreaded “whistle” caused by standard flex lines struggling to handle the gas flow. Our flex lines are specially designed to be “whistle-free,” ensuring a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. As long as your fuel pressure is set correctly, and your main gas line is large enough in diameter to supply the fuel volume, you can rest assured that you will enjoy quiet operation.
Keep in mind that a gentle whooshing sound is normal, as air moves through the lines. Occasionally, a bit of moisture in the line might cause a gurgle, but this should disappear as it evaporates. To prevent moisture buildup, it’s always a good idea to keep your burner covered when not in use.
Installation Tips
While we recommend professional installation for all gas components, here are some helpful tips if you’re a seasoned DIYer:
Key Valve Installation
- Prime the valve: Before installation, make sure to prime the key valve. (Check out our video for a step-by-step guide!)
- Create a hole: You’ll need a hole in your fire feature to accommodate the key valve. Our complete systems come pre-drilled for your convenience.
- Size matters: The hole should be approximately 1-1/4″ in diameter.
- Consider an extension: For thicker walls, like those in paver builds, a key valve extension might be necessary.
Stability is key: If you’re not using a hard pipe to connect to the key valve inlet, you might find that it moves when you turn the key. Get creative and build a simple mounting bracket to keep it stable.
Flex Line Installation
- Seal it up: Standard “straight” fittings require pipe dope or tape to ensure a secure seal.
- Flared fittings: “Flared” fittings, on the other hand, don’t require any additional sealant. You should still use a wrench to tighten a flared fitting to avoid leaks.
