Creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your backyard is a must, especially if you enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and family. One of the most popular options for generating a warm, inviting atmosphere is by installing a gas fire pit. What size of gas fire pit is right for your outdoor space? Take a closer look at the factors to consider when determining the ideal gas fire pit for your property so your next gathering has the perfect ambiance.
The Purpose of Your Fire Pit
Before browsing DIY gas fire pit kits, determine the primary purpose of the fire pit. Will it be for family time, or do you plan to host large gatherings of friends and neighbors? Small fire pits are perfect for intimate settings, while larger ones are suitable for backyard parties. Not only does size matter for aesthetic purposes, but it also affects the ease of installation and heat output.
Space and Proximity
The dimensions of the area in which you hope to install your fire pit play a significant role in finding the right size. If you have a small patio, there’s no point in choosing an oversized fire pit that takes up too much space and diminishes its functionality and safety.
We have found that the sweet spot for furniture is approximately 18″ to 24″ from the outside edge of the fire pit. This gives you ample room for maneuvering around the fire, but keeps you close enough to feel the warmth.
Heating Capacity
The size of a fire pit also affects its heating capacity. If you usually host small gatherings or have limited space in your yard, choose a fire pit with a lower BTU (British Thermal Unit). For large outdoor spaces and gatherings, a higher BTU-rated fire pit will keep everyone warm.
Design and Décor
Looks matter, too! The fire pit you choose should complement the style of your outdoor space. A well-proportioned fire pit can enhance the ambiance in your yard. Take the time to evaluate different styles and sizes that will blend with your home’s outdoor design.

I was really hoping that you would provide some basic formulas for burner/btu size. For example, how many BTU should I plan for a six foot long area fire table burner, and how far away will people feel comfortable at various outdoor stationary air ambient temperatures? It seems that I what I really need to compute the right size fire table.
Hi John, great question. There are many variables, but here’s a good starting point. A 72″ fire table minus 16″ (that’s an 8″ ledge which is pretty standard) = 56″ long burn area. For a burn area of that size, I’d recommend a burner that is no longer than 50″ long. A good rule of thumb is to subtract 6″ from the burn area. There are a few great burners for that area, such as the CFB290 or the CFBL270, or even the CFBH300. So based on that size, you’re looking at a max BTU of around 300,000. The Crossfire burners need at least 60-70% of that capacity from the fuel line. Place your seating around 18″ – 22″ away from the ledge of the fire table and everyone sitting around it will feel the heat well. Avoid stainless steel burners, as they don’t give off much heat. Stick with the Crossfire for maximum warmth.
